What Do You Need to Know About Fast Charging?

Fast charging has become a must-have feature on today's phones, and it seems that every new phone promises faster charging. It keeps our batteries charged during a busy day and gets us back in action in just a few minutes.

However, different companies have a variety of different standards, and the speed often depends on the individual cable and charger. This can get a little confusing, so we're here to break it all down for you.

    What Is Fast Charging?

    100w fast charger

From smartphones to laptops, from cables to chargers, we hear "fast charging" all the time, so we need to understand what it is first.

Fast charging is a term often used to refer to chargers and devices that can charge faster than the current charging standard (5 watts) by increasing the wattage (W) input to the phone's battery. Typically, the higher the wattage, the faster the charge rate.

Today's fast-charging smartphones range from 18W to 120W, with charging times ranging from 20 minutes to over an hour. There are even 240-watt super fast charging phones on the market, although these are not the norm. Fast charging is not just reserved for wired charging, but now wireless charging as well.

    How Does Fast Charging Work?

The basic components of charging are amperage, voltage, and watts. Amperage (or current) is the amount of electricity flowing from the battery to your phone or other connected device. Voltage is the speed or strength of the current. Multiplying volts by amps gives you wattage, the measure of total power. Looking at an example, a 3A/5V charge will deliver 15W of power.

    PD240W fast charging cable

To make a device charge faster, most manufacturers either boost the amperage or vary the voltage in order to increase the amount of potential energy. The majority of fast charging standards typically vary the voltage rather than boost the amperage. They bump the voltage up from 5V to 9V or 12V and beyond or increase the amperage to 3A and above. The introduction of USB-C helps accomplish this with support for up to 100W and 20V, which makes faster charging speeds possible.

Remember, your device can only absorb as much power as its charging circuitry is designed to. For fast charging to work, you need a phone or other device with a charging circuit capable of using one of the fast charging standards, and a charger and cable that support the same standard.

    Types of Fast Charging Standard

There are many different fast charging standards available today. The best standard for your device depends on the type of phone you have, the standards it supports, and the charger you use.

    • USB Power Delivery

USB-PD is a fast charging standard that you can find on smartphones and other devices such as laptops, monitors, and portable storage units. It was released in 2012 and has been the most commonly supported charging standard since 2020.

It has the distinct advantage of being an open charging standard, free and highly scalable, that any manufacturer can use and implement in their devices. It offers increased power levels of up to 240 watts. The power direction is no longer fixed, which means that charging can go both ways, for example, you can use your smartphone to charge another device. What's more, it can provide fast charging at voltages between 5 and 48 Volts, and 0.5, 0.9, 1.5, 3, or 5 Amperes, and can deliver a maximum power of 240 Watts.

    • Qualcomm Quick Charge

Quick Charge (QC) is a proprietary battery charging protocol developed by Qualcomm. It is supported by mobile devices running on Qualcomm SoCs and some chargers; both the device and the charger must support QC or QC charging will not be possible. It charges the battery in the device by increasing the output voltage provided by the USB charger at a faster rate than standard USB while using technology to prevent uncontrolled fast charging and internal regulation of the input voltage from causing battery damage.

To date, Qualcomm has released five major versions of its proprietary Quick Charge standard, all of which are backward compatible. The latest Quick Charge 5 is backward compatible with all previous versions of Quick Charge and USB PD. It is also compatible with the USB PD specification and is capable of delivering up to 100W of power for more demanding gadgets. This is much more power than previous versions, which typically delivered 18W and 27W to compatible gadgets.

    • Other Common Proprietary Standards

Over the years, many other companies have developed their own fast charging standards. For example, Huawei SuperCharge and its version 2.0 is Huawei's proprietary fast charging standard. It can deliver up to 10 volts and 4 amps, and up to 40 watts of electrical power. These standards are also compatible with Qualcomm Quick Charge. Apple has chosen to use the USB PD (USB Power Delivery) standard for Apple Quick Charge on its iPhones, starting with the iPhone 8 and iPhone X.

There are some other standards, such as Samsung Adaptive Quick Charge, Motorola TurboPower, MediaTek Pump Express, and Oppo SuperVooc Flash Charge, etc.

    Fast Charging Device Types

There are several different types of devices with fast charging capabilities that go beyond the typical charging cables and plug-in wall units. These are some examples of the most common fast-charging devices and the features we offer for each.

    The Future of Fast Charging

Charging rates are accelerating every year, with more and more devices offering the ability to quickly refill their batteries. This trend is about to grow even further, and it will only take us a few minutes to fully charge our portable gadgets. We can also expect to see different kinds of battery technology that will replace today's lithium-ion batteries.
